Primary Care Electives for Students
Greenstone Family Clinic invites student doctors to participate in a unique training programme in Auckland, New Zealand.
Multi-cultural Patient Population
This is an opportunity to become a part of a Health Organisation, dedicated to delivering evidence-based integrated health care to a diverse patient population: Maori, Pacific people (Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, Niue, Vanuatu, Rarotongan), Mid-eastern (Iraqi, both Christian and Muslim) Asian (Cambodian, Vietnamese, Indian, Malaysian, Chinese), and European.
Objectives & Expected Outcomes
- To participate fully as a team member in training and healthcare delivery
- To develop cultural awareness & competence
- Recognise, understand & appreciate impact of determinants of health on Maori people
- Gain confidence in the ability to function successfully & creatively in a new and different social & medical environment
- Visit a Marae (Maori Meeting House)
- To participate in University learning modules as available
Supervision
You will be working with many doctors, nurses, community workers and reception staff. The primary supervision is conducted by Dr. Tana Fishman and Dr. Bruce Arroll; your evaluation will be conducted by one or both of the above supervisors.
Greenstone Family Clinic facilities
- Exam rooms, treatment rooms, immunization room
- Services include ultrasonography, audiology, midwifery, and disease management programmes
On-call
There is no on-call schedule; however, you may be invited to participate in one or two after-hours clinics.
Dermatology
Unique learning programme included.
Eligibility
- Medical students in good standing currently engaged in clinical training/clerkships
- Registrars/residents interested in primary care training/general practice
Requirements
- Flexibility
- Letter of permission from your programme director or Dean
- Proof of Malpractice insurance (or equivalent) coverage while overseas
- Proof of medical license or position of good standing in medical school
- Ability to arrange an accommodation
Fees
There is a small charge to secure a placement: USD$350.00 by banker's cheque (money order) to cover administrative costs. There is no stipend paid to students.

Our modern clinic is located in a medical building in Manurewa, a suburb 20 km south of Auckland, New Zealand's largest city.

Travel
Travel in and around Auckland is relatively easy. There are buses and a train to Greenstone Family Clinic in Manurewa with a brief walk to the clinic. Car pools are easily arranged with preceptors/supervisors and other students if you are staying close to CBD.
